Released as a pair in late 2017, these limited-edition expressions from Nikka showcase the versatile influence of Caribbean rum casks on the company's two distinct distillery styles. While the Yoichi provides a rugged, peaty foundation, the Miyagikyo offers a softer, more floral canvas, both of which were matured in traditional casks before being finished for approximately one year in rum wood.

Tasting Notes:

Yoichi Rum Wood Finish (2017)

Nose: An intriguing juxtaposition of styles. Initial aromas of tropical fruits—specifically charred pineapple and green banana—are layered over the classic Yoichi salt spray and a medicinal, almost menthol-like freshness.

Palate: The palate is robust and oily. Peat smoke is immediately present but softened by the rum influence, manifesting as candied ginger, toasted coconut, and sweet malt. Spices like cinnamon and clove provide a warm, prickly depth.

Finish: Long and savory. It leaves a lingering impression of slightly bitter cocoa, roasted barley, and a touch of coastal brine.

Miyagikyo Rum Wood Finish (2017)

Nose: Much sweeter and more fruit-forward than its sibling. It opens with rich notes of orange marmalade, golden raisins, and wildflower honey. There is a clear "dark sugar" rum influence that complements the distillery's natural elegance.

Palate: A creamy, mouth-coating texture. Flavors of buttery caramel sauce and vanilla bean dominate, followed by baked oranges and a gentle white pepper spice. It feels significantly more "confectionary" than the Yoichi.

Finish: Medium to long. It concludes with a soothing warmth of ginger-infused toffee and a soft, oaky sweetness that persists for several minutes.

Quick Fact: While many sherry-matured whiskies use Oloroso or Pedro Ximénez casks for their heavy fruit and sugar content, Bunnahabhain chose Manzanilla for this release specifically to highlight the "coastal" DNA of the distillery.Because Manzanilla is aged under a layer of yeast (flor) in a humid, seaside environment, it imparts a nutty, saline crispness that mirrors the air in the Bunnahabhain warehouses.
