Whisky Exchange Whisky Sample 30 Year Old April Fool 2021 Release (30ml, 51.7%)

Don't let the 'Extremely Young' label fool you. This 2021 release from The Whisky Exchange was an elaborate marketing prank that rewarded the brave. While the front label claimed it was a youthful, characterless malt, the bottle came with a small UV torch. When shone upon the label, a secret message revealed the truth: this is a magnificent 30-year-old Speyside Single Malt, distilled in 1990 and matured exclusively in First-Fill Bourbon casks. Bottled at a natural strength of 51.7%, it is a masterclass in how high-quality American oak can preserve a spirit's vibrancy over three decades.

Tasting Note

Nose: Remarkably fresh and "yellow" for a 30-year-old. It opens with lemon drizzle cake, vanilla sponge, and Victoria plum. The first-fill bourbon wood provides a lush backdrop of buttercream and coconut macaroons. As it breathes, more complex, aged notes emerge: polished oak, beeswax, and a hint of mint imperial.

Palate: The arrival is big and oily. It leads with a surge of candied lemon slices and pineapple cubes, followed by the rich creaminess of white chocolate and milk bottle sweets. Mid-palate, it develops a sophisticated spice profile: black pepper, nutmeg, and ginger powder, balanced by a refreshing hint of menthol and aniseed.

Finish: Long, sweet, and buttery. The wood influence is perfectly contained—providing vanilla butter cookies and a gentle oak tingle—without any of the bitterness or heavy tannins often found in 30-year-old malts.

Why it's special

The "Mystery" Distillery: While undisclosed, the vibrant, citrusy, and waxy profile led many experts to suggest a high-quality Glenburgie or a particularly ester-driven Glenlivet from the 1990 vintage.
