Thompson Brothers Whisky Sample Islay 1990 32 Year Old 2022 Release (30ml, 49.3%)
This is an extraordinary relic of Islay’s past. Distilled in 1990 and matured for over three decades in a Refill Barrel, it was bottled at a natural cask strength of 49.3%. At 32 years old, the aggressive peat of Islay has undergone a total transformation, moving away from "smoke" and into the realm of "exotic oils and tropical resins."
This is arguably one of the "crown jewels" of the Thompson Brothers’ recent archive. When an independent bottler releases an unidentified 1990 Islay at this age, it usually points toward one of the legendary south-shore distilleries (Laphroaig or Ardbeg), as very few others had stock of this quality and peat profile from that specific vintage.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Incredibly complex and "old school." It opens with waxed lemons, medicinal bandages, and dried eucalyptus. There is a deep, subtle smoke—more like cold chimney soot and old leather. As it breathes, notes of tropical mango skin and grapefruit pith emerge.
Palate: A silky, oily masterpiece. The peat is incredibly well-integrated, tasting of salt-crusted kelp and smoked honey. The fruit profile is legendary: guava, passionfruit, and lime cordial, all wrapped in a thin veil of medicinal peat and beeswax.
Finish: Eternal. It leaves a lingering tingle of brine, white pepper, and a ghostly, tropical sweetness that stays on the palate for minutes.
Why this bottle is special
The 1990 Vintage: In the whisky world, 1990 is a "mythical" year for Islay. The spirits produced that year have a reputation for developing incredible tropical fruit notes when aged for 30+ years. This bottle is a perfect example of that "fruit meets soot" profile.
The "Secret" Identity: While the label only says "Islay," the profile is a loud hint. It carries the unmistakable medicinal, tropical character of a world-class Laphroaig from the early 90s. Owning a 32-year-old single cask is a rare privilege for any enthusiast.
Pinnacle Maturity: This is the "End Game" of Islay whisky. It represents the point where the peat and the wood have reached a perfect equilibrium. It is special because it tastes like "Old Islay"—a profile that modern, faster production methods struggle to replicate.
