Thompson Brothers Whisky Sample Sutherland 2000 19 Year Old Netherlands 2019 Release (30ml, 51.9%)

The Thompson Brothers Sutherland 2000 (19 Year Old) Netherlands Exclusive is a legendary "mystery" malt that essentially acts as a love letter to the coastal highlands. While the label technically says "Sutherland," the prominent cat logo and the distinct waxy profile are clear winks to the fact that this is Clynelish spirit.

This specific release was bottled in late 2019 for the Dutch market (often associated with the importer Bresser & Timmer) and is highly sought after for its "pure," unadulterated highland character.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Classic and unmistakable. It opens with scented beeswax, furniture polish, and fresh wool. There is a bright, acidic fruitiness of grapefruit skin and green apple peels, followed by a saline, coastal air—think of sea spray on hot rocks. As it breathes, a sweeter, herbal side emerges, with hints of heather honey and dried chamomile.

Palate: The texture is the star here—thick, waxy, and oily, coating the entire mouth. The arrival is citrus-forward with lemon curd and lime zest, transitioning into a savory, slightly "dirty" profile of mineral oil, candle wax, and a touch of brine. Mid-palate, it turns creamy with vanilla custard and almond milk, balanced by a sharp white pepper and ginger spice.

Finish: Long, warming, and waxy. The waxiness lingers for minutes, accompanied by salted butter on toast, dried herbs, and a final, zesty burst of lemon peel.

Why it's special
  • The Refill Wood: Because it was matured in a refill hogshead, the wood influence is minimal. It doesn't taste like oak; it tastes like the spirit. This is essential for Clynelish, as heavy wood can often drown out the delicate waxiness.

  • The "One of 192": With such a tiny outturn, this bottle disappeared almost instantly from Dutch shelves and now only appears at high-end auctions.

  • The 2000 Vintage: Many whisky enthusiasts consider the year 2000 to be a high-water mark for Clynelish, producing whiskies that are more "old school" (waxy and animalistic) than more recent vintages.
