Thompson Brothers Whisky Sample Glen Moray 2007 13 Year Old Nickolls and Perks Exclusive 2020 Release (30ml, 54.4%)

The Thompson Brothers Glen Moray 2007 (13 Year Old) for Nickolls & Perks is a "summery" Speyside gem that highlights why Glen Moray is often called the "chameleon" of distilleries. It takes to high-quality wood exceptionally well, and this release is the result of 13 years in a First-Fill Bourbon Barrel.

This Nickolls & Perks bottling is all about brightness, acidity, and classic American oak influence.

Tasting Notes

Nose: An immediate hit of "Mr. Kipling" lemon fancies (sweet lemon sponge and icing). This is followed by a classic Speyside fruit salad of green apples, ripe pears, and a hint of banana. There is a delicate floral undertone of lavender and lilac, balanced by the rich, creamy sweetness of vanilla fudge and golden syrup.

Palate: The texture is creamy and mouth-coating. It leads with a continuous stream of cooked pears and grilled pineapple, dusted with icing sugar. Mid-palate, it turns spicy and warming, with cinnamon rolls, white pepper, and a touch of almond cake. Despite the high ABV, the alcohol carries the fruit notes rather than masking them.

Finish: Long and evocative. The spice settles down to leave a lingering tartness of lemon drizzle cake and mango. It ends on a crisp, clean note of polished oak and a final zing of grapefruit.

Why it's special

  • Extremely Limited: With only 131 bottles, this is a significantly smaller outturn than their standard small-batch releases. It’s a "pure" single-cask expression that hasn't been tinkered with.

  • The "First-Fill" Advantage: Glen Moray spirit is light and elegant; 13 years in a first-fill bourbon barrel provides exactly the right amount of vanilla and coconut structure to support those delicate lemon and pear notes without overwhelming them.

  • A Reliable Favorite: While Glen Moray is often used for blending, the Thompson Brothers consistently pick barrels that prove it can compete with the best single malts in Speyside when aged correctly.
