Thompson Brothers Whisky Sample Fettercairn 2006 14 Year Old 2021 Release (30ml, 55.1%)
The Thompson Brothers Fettercairn 14 Year Old (2021 Release) is a standout bottle that highlights the "new era" of Fettercairn. For a long time, Fettercairn was considered a "hidden" Highland workhorse, often criticized for a funky, metallic edge in official bottlings. However, independent bottlers like the Thompson Bros have proven that when presented in its raw, unadulterated state, it is one of the most tropical and complex spirits in Scotland.
While there is some overlap with a 2007 vintage, the 2006/2021 release is a small-batch vatting of two refill American oak barrels that has become a bit of a "unicorn" for fans of the distillery.
Tasting Notes
Nose: An explosion of tropical fruit salad. It opens with juicy pineapple, passion fruit, and tinned peaches. Beneath the fruit, there is a distinct creaminess—think coconut macaroons and lemon shortbread. As it breathes, you’ll find a touch of candied ginger and white pepper, with a very faint, nostalgic hint of old dresser drawers and dusty paper.
Palate: The arrival is oily and vibrant. The tropical theme continues with mango and grilled pineapple, but it’s balanced by a savory, bready backbone of raw pastry dough and honeyed toast. Mid-palate, it turns slightly "green" and spicy, with notes of Thai basil, mint leaves, and a warming prickle of pink peppercorns.
Finish: Long, clean, and waxy. It leaves a lingering impression of lemon meringue pie and vanilla bean, ending on a dry, slightly mineral note of chalk and olive oil.
Why it's special
-
Refill Wood Perfection: Fettercairn spirit is delicate. By using refill barrels, Phil and Simon ensured the spirit didn't get "over-oaked." You are tasting the result of the distillery's unique production process (the cooling rings) rather than just the barrel.
-
The "Dramface" Favorite: This bottling was highly praised by enthusiasts (notably on the Dramface platform) for its value-to-quality ratio. It helped change the narrative around Fettercairn from a "blenders' malt" to a high-tier single malt destination.
