Thompson Brothers Whisky Sample Craigellachie 2006 15 Year Old 2022 Release (30ml, 50%)
The Thompson Brothers Craigellachie 2006 (15 Year Old) is a quintessential example of why the Thompson Bros (Phil and Simon) are currently some of the most respected independent bottlers in the game. They have a knack for finding "dirty" distillates and presenting them with absolute clarity.
Craigellachie is famous for its worm tubs (traditional copper cooling coils), which result in a spirit that is famously "meaty" and sulphurous—characteristics that blenders love but can be polarizing for single malt fans. This 15-year-old release from 2022 captures that industrial muscle and wraps it in a layer of creamy, orchard-fruit sweetness.
Tasting Notes
Nose: A complex tug-of-war between the garden and the garage. It opens with brambles and candy floss, quickly shifting into orchard fruits (hard pears and green apples). Then, the signature Craigellachie character appears: machine grease, toasted oak, and a hint of charcoal. There is a delicate floral lift, like rose hips, and a deep, nutty undertone of walnut oil.
Palate: Medium-bodied and notably oily. The arrival is surprisingly sweet, featuring vanilla, honey, and barley sugar. This is followed by a surge of "creamy citrus"—lemon curd and grapefruit zest. Mid-palate, it becomes savory and textured, with notes of green plums, almond extract, and a faint, musty herbal quality (like dried sage).
Finish: Long and resonant. The fruit fades into a drier, dustier profile of oak moss, black pepper, and toasted walnuts. A final, "clean" industrial note—think hot engine oil or wax—lingers, leaving a savory tingle on the tongue.
Whys it's special
-
The Refill Choice: By choosing a refill hogshead, the Thompson Brothers ensured that the wood didn't drown out the "worm tub" character. This is Craigellachie in its most authentic form.
-
The 50% "Sweet Spot": While many IBs (Independent Bottlers) bottle at full cask strength, the Thompson Brothers often opt for 50%. This specific proof tames the more aggressive sulphurous notes of the young spirit while maintaining a heavy, mouth-coating texture.
-
The "Dirty" Speyside Vibe: If you enjoy whiskies that feel "thick" and "old-world" (like Mortlach or Benrinnes), this is a masterclass in that style. It feels more substantial and "unrefined" in the best possible way.
