This particular bottling is a true "insider’s dram" for the Melbourne whisky scene. The Aultmore 2009 13 Year Old (Thompson Brothers) was selected as a One or Two Bar Exclusive based in Melbourne.
If you're sitting at the bar in Melbourne, you're tasting a single cask that was hand-picked for the Australian palate. It represents a bold departure from Aultmore’s usually light and "foggie" style, thanks to its full maturation in a Red Wine Barrel.
Tasting Notes
Nose: A powerful, aromatic entrance. It leads with blackberry jam and raspberry tart, underscored by a rich, savory oak spice. There are hints of cranberry compote and pink peppercorns, with a faint, floral sweetness like rosewaterthat reminds you of the underlying Aultmore spirit.
Palate: Thick and mouth-coating. The arrival is a "red fruit explosion"—strawberry yogurt, pomegranate molasses, and juicy plums. Mid-palate, the wine tannins provide a structural grip, bringing notes of dark chocolate, cinnamon, and a touch of leather. Despite the fruitiness, there is a refreshing lime peel and orange zest acidity that keeps it balanced.
Finish: Long, warming, and pleasantly drying. It leaves a lingering trail of toasted nuts, dry earth, and a final prickle of clove and cinnamon. The "winey" character stays until the very end, ending on a note of blackcurrant juice and cocoa.

The "One or Two" Connection: Exclusive bottlings for bars are rare in Australia. This was a direct collaboration between the Thompson Brothers and the Melbourne team, ensuring the liquid met the specific quality standards of one of the city's premier whisky destinations.
-
Full Red Wine Maturation: Many whiskies are "finished" in wine casks for 6–12 months. This was in the red wine barrel for the entire 13 years, resulting in a much deeper integration of flavor and a wild, natural color that mimics an old cognac or a dark sherry.
