Thompson Brothers Whisky Sample Auchentoshan 1998 24 Year Old 2022 Release (30ml, 52.6%)

The Thompson Brothers Auchentoshan 1998 (24 Year Old) is a masterclass in how age can transform a light, triple-distilled spirit into something remarkably weighty and complex. Released in 2022, this bottling is a "Toshan" for people who think they don't like Auchentoshan.

While the distillery's standard profile is often described as light and grassy, this 24-year-old maturation in refill barrels(likely ex-bourbon) has allowed the spirit to develop a surprising tropical density.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Remarkably vibrant and "bright" for its age. It opens with an explosion of tropical fruits—overripe pineapple, passionfruit, and banana chips. There is a sophisticated "old-school" wood note, like varnished oak and dry wood shavings, which quickly settles into a creamy vanilla bean custard. A faint, curious hint of mint leaf and sea breezeprovides a fresh lift.

Palate: Much heavier and oilier than expected. The arrival is juicy and sweet, featuring canned peaches, mango, and lemon zest. Mid-palate, the triple-distilled character shows its elegance with honeyed oats and white chocolate, balanced by a spicy, "zingy" prickle of white pepper and ginger. It feels substantial, almost "chewy" on the tongue.

Finish: Long and slightly drying. It leaves a lingering trail of citrus peel, coriander seed, and tea leaves. A final touch of sweet icing sugar and malted biscuits provides a nostalgic, comforting end to a complex journey.

Why it's special

  • The Weight: Triple-distilled spirits are often "thin." After 24 years, this spirit has gained a viscosity and a waxy texture that makes it feel much older and more premium than the entry-level official bottlings.

  • The 1998 Vintage: 1998 was a stellar year for Auchentoshan distillate, and several independent bottlers (including Thompson Bros and North Star) have used these casks to showcase the distillery's true potential for long-term aging.
