Thompson Brothers Whisky Sample Speyside 1990 30 Year Old 2021 Release (30ml, 50.4%)

Distilled in 1990 at an undisclosed Speyside distillery (widely suspected to be either Glen Grant or Speyburn) and matured for a full three decades in a refill American oak barrel. Unlike the 'Small Batch' releases, this is a single-cask expression that yielded only 278 bottles. At 50.4% ABV, it represents the absolute peak of 1990s Speyside elegance—where the vibrant fruit of the spirit has finally married perfectly with the gentle, honeyed spice of long-term oak maturation. It is a 'naked' look at high-age Speyside, stripped of heavy sherry influence to reveal a stunningly waxy and tropical core

Tasting Notes

Nose: Remarkably fresh for a 30-year-old. It opens with sweet peaches, mirabelle plums, and flower honey. There is a sophisticated "waxiness"—think beeswax candles and sunflower oil—balanced by a lighter, herbal lift of pine needles and fresh mint. As it opens, a hint of custardy vanilla and syrupy sponge cake emerges.

Palate: Thick and creamy. A beautiful arrival of ripe banana, papaya, and stewed peaches. The mid-palate introduces a "fatty" style of spirit, showing beeswax and mead, with a gentle resinous touch. The oak is very well-integrated, tasting like sweet mint-infused wood and herbal tea (chamomile) rather than bitter tannins.

Finish: Medium to long and very clean. The waxy sweetness returns, balanced by a subtle green herbal note and a lingering touch of white pepper and clove.

Why it's special

  • The Texture: This specific outturn is noted for its "fatty" mouthfeel. The 50.4% ABV is high enough to preserve the natural oils that create that legendary waxy Speyside texture.

  • The Mystery Pedigree: Rumors for this specific 278-bottle lot often lean toward Glen Grant because of its floral/herbal lift, or Speyburn (which has a cult following in the Thompson Brothers' hometown of Dornoch). Either way, it is elite-tier liquid for a fraction of the price of an official 30-year-old.
