Tasting Notes
1. Caol Ila 9 Year Old Error 502 Bad Gateway 2022 Release
Distilled: 2013 | 57.1% ABV
Cask Treatment: Matured in a Refill Hogshead then finished in a Fresh Sherry Octave.
This is raw, coastal power. At 9 years old and a high 57.1% proof, the medicinal and maritime DNA of Caol Ila is front and center.
Nose: Punchy and coastal. Smoked lemons, medicinal bandages, and a distinct scent of wet harbor ropes. The sherry octave adds a fleeting note of red berries and toasted nuts.
Palate: Oily and explosive. Sweet peat smoke meets salted caramel. There is a mid-palate flash of cracked black pepper and dried seaweed.
Finish: Long and "sooty." Lingering wood ash and a sharp, saline lime-zest tang.
2. Orkney (Highland Park) 14 Year Old Error 502 Bad Gateway 2022 Release
Distilled: 2008 | 57.0% ABV
Cask Treatment: Matured in a Refill Hogshead with a 21-month finish in an Oloroso Sherry Octave.
Hidden behind the "Orkney" name is the honeyed peat of Highland Park. This 14-year-old expression balances heathery smoke with a robust coastal influence.
Nose: Aromatic heather honey and gentle, earthy peat. The Oloroso finish brings out notes of walnut whip, dried figs, and a touch of spent matches.
Palate: Full-bodied. A beautiful balance of honeyed sweetness and savory smoke. Dark chocolate-covered ginger and sea-salt flakes.
Finish: Warming and spicy. Lingering notes of clove, orange peel, and drying oak tannins.
3. Craigellachie 14 Year Old Error 502 Bad Gateway 2023 Release
Distilled: 2009 | 53.7% ABV
Cask Treatment: Matured in a Refill Hogshead.
Known as the "Bad Boy of Speyside," Craigellachie is famous for its heavy, sulfurous, and oily character. This 2009 vintage is muscular and unapologetic.
Nose: The classic Craigellachie "industrial" charm. Beeswax, strikes of sulfur (matchstick), and roasted pineapple.
Palate: Thick and "chewy." Notes of fatty bacon, overripe orchard fruits, and a buttery, pastry-like texture.
Finish: Long and savory. A lingering oiliness with a hint of white pepper and toasted almonds.
4. Aultmore 14 Year Old Error 502 Bad Gateway 2023 Release
Distilled: 2009 | 55.2% ABV
Cask Treatment: Matured for 14 years in a Fresh French Oak Red Wine Barrique.
This is a rare departure for Aultmore, which is typically hidden away in light, grassy refill casks. This "Error 502" release was allowed a full-term maturation (or a very long finish) in a fresh Red Wine Barrique. The result is a spectacular clash between the "Foggie Moss" spirit’s delicate floral notes and the bold, tannic, and berry-heavy influence of French oak. At 55.2%, it is a vibrant and intensely colored malt that drinks more like a high-end gourmet dessert.
Nose: Rich and aromatic. It opens with summer pudding, brambles, and redcurrants. Beneath the fruit is a deep, spicy layer of toasted oak, sandalwood, and a hint of dark chocolate.
Palate: Full-bodied and juicy. The palate is flooded with raspberry jam, black cherries, and poached plums. The French oak provides a firm structure with notes of clove, tannic red wine, and a touch of leather.
Finish: Long and warming. It leaves a dry, spicy tingle of cinnamon and ginger, with a lingering sweetness of red grape skins and cocoa.
5. Strathclyde 28 Year Old Single Grain Error 502 2023 Release
Distilled: 1995 | 43.4% ABV
Cask Treatment: Matured in a Refill Bourbon Barrel.
The "Quiet Giant" of the set. Single Grain whisky undergoes a magical transformation after 28 years, turning from sharp spirit into a buttery, tropical dessert.
Nose: Decadent dessert. Vanilla bean paste, coconut macaroons, and a touch of old, dusty library books.
Palate: Silky and luxurious. Toasted marshmallow, butterscotch, and tinned peaches in heavy syrup. No alcohol burn—just pure, creamy sweetness.
Finish: Gentle and lingering. A fade of coconut milk and soft, spicy oak.
