The Springbank 20 Year Old Society Bottling (2024 Release) is one of the most prestigious and anticipated releases in the history of the Springbank Members' Society. While the 5-year-old expressions we discussed previously show the raw power of the spirit, this 20-year-old release demonstrates the incredible transformative power of full-term maturation in a Fresh Port Cask.

This is not a "finish"; the spirit has spent two decades interacting with the rich, wine-soaked oak, resulting in a dark, brooding, and profoundly complex Campbeltown dram.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Deep, dark, and autumnal. The initial aroma is a thick wave of damson jam, black cherries, and old leather bookbindings. As it breathes, the classic Springbank "dirty" notes emerge—dunnage warehouse floors, soot, and a hint of oily diesel. There is a refined sweetness of dark chocolate shavings and pipe tobacco.

Palate: The texture is remarkably velvety and heavy. It leads with a concentrated dark fruit sweetness—think blackberry reduction and spiced plums. This is immediately met by a savory, earthy peat smoke and a touch of sea salt. The Port influence brings a dry, tannic structure that offers notes of roasted walnuts and espresso beans mid-palate.

Finish: Immensely long and drying. The sweetness of the Port fades into a sophisticated bitterness of 90% dark cocoa and charred oak. A final, lingering note of dunnage funk and a whisper of wood smoke remains on the palate for minutes.
