The Springbank 15 Year Old Rum Wood (2019 Release) is a distinct departure from the more common "Rum finishes" found in the industry. Unlike many whiskies that are merely "finished" in rum casks for a few months, this expression was fully matured for 15 years in Rum barrels.
Distilled in December 2003 and bottled in August 2019, it was a limited run of 9,000 bottles. It is widely praised for being a "brighter, sunnier" version of Springbank, where the tropical sweetness of the rum perfectly tames the distillery's rugged, oily character.
Tasting Notes
Nose: It leads with a vibrant tropical sweetness—think coconut flakes, dried pineapple, and green bananas. This is followed by a classic Springbank "savory" layer of sea salt and dunnage warehouse mustiness. There is also a surprising pastry note, reminiscent of toasted marshmallows and sticky toffee pudding, with just a whisper of cold ashy smoke.
Palate: The texture is velvety and oily. The initial impact is sweet and dessert-like: tropical fruit pavlova, crème brûlée, and toffee apples. As it develops, the "industrial" side of Springbank emerges with notes of flint, olive oil, and leather. A citrus yuzu note provides a sharp, refreshing counter-balance to the rich rum sweetness.
Finish: The finish is long and leans into the earthy, "farmyard" character of the distillery. It leaves a drying sensation of white pepper and ginger spice, with a final, lingering note of salted caramel and very light peat.
