SMWS Whisky Sample Distillery 24 Rare Release Macallan 14 Year Old Massive oak extraction 2023 Release (30ml, 63%)
The SMWS "Massive Oak Extraction" is a rare and formidable beast. Released in 2023 to celebrate the Spirit of Speyside Festival, this 14-year-old Macallan is a departure from the distillery's polished official bottlings.
At a staggering 63.0% ABV, this is Macallan stripped of its marketing armor and dressed in heavy, high-tannin armor. It’s a marriage of first-fill Spanish oak Oloroso hogsheads and refill American oak Pedro Ximénez butts.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Dark and brooding. It leads with sherry-soaked raisins, spiced wine, and charcuterie. There is a heavy confectionery layer of crème brûlée and chocolate-covered strawberries, but it’s pierced by sharp peppercorns and antique musk. As it opens, it reveals Dutch cocoa, cloves, and Dutch licorice.
Palate: Thick, syrupy, and initially quite hot. The "Massive Oak" arrives immediately—toasted almonds, hazelnuts, and big tannic pucker. Any initial sweetness from dark cherries and molasses is quickly countered by espresso, burnt heather, and old Cognac. It’s spicy and vibrant, with cinnamon, ginger, and chili heat that lingers.
Finish: Immense and drying. The oak grip remains firm, leaving notes of bitter chocolate, balsamic reduction, and pencil shavings. Despite the "extraction," it avoids being overly bitter, finishing instead with a spicy fruitcake richness
Why it's special
The "Laddie" Strength: At 63%, this is Macallan at a proof almost never seen in official releases (the Classic Cutusually tops out in the high 50s). It allows the oily, heavy new-make spirit to truly show its weight.
The Wood Balance: It uses both Spanish and American oak. The Spanish oak provides the spice and tannins, while the American oak provides the vanilla and fruit, creating a "push and pull" that keeps the dram interesting.
Independent Macallan: Getting a high-age, single-cask-style Macallan from an independent bottler like SMWS is increasingly rare and expensive. This release was a "no-brainer" for members looking for the real distillery character.
