The Octomore 14 series, released in late 2023, is titled "The Impossible Equation." This refers to Bruichladdich’s ongoing experiment to prove that extreme peat (super-high PPM), high ABV, and young age (5 years) can result in a sophisticated, elegant whisky rather than a chaotic "smoke bomb."
Tasting Notes
Octomore 14.1 (59.6% ABV)
The Baseline: 100% Scottish Barley | 128.9 PPM | 1st-Fill American Whiskey Casks
-
Nose: Opens with bright smoked vanilla, sweet caramel, and lemon zest. Beneath the sweetness, there is a distinct mineral quality—think wet flint and sea spray—wrapped in a cloud of clean, medicinal peat smoke.
-
Palate: The texture is surprisingly creamy. Initial notes of toasted coconut and almond are followed by a citrus burst of lime and pomelo. The smoke is ever-present but refined, tasting like a cold seaside bonfire.
-
Finish: Long and gritty. It leaves a lingering trail of charred oak, earthy peat, and a final hint of vanilla pod.
Octomore 14.2 (57.7% ABV)
The European Oak Variable: 128.9 PPM | Oloroso, Amarone & Pauillac Casks
-
Nose: Much deeper and darker than the 14.1. Aromas of redcurrant jelly, leather, and unlit cigars. The smoke here is "heavier," smelling of roasted meats and plum compote.
-
Palate: A rich, spicy arrival. Black forest gateau and dried prunes meet a savory, salt-crusted barbecue smoke. The influence of the Pauillac wine casks adds a sophisticated tannic grip and notes of clove.
-
Finish: Warming and dry. Notes of dark chocolate, toasted walnuts, and a lingering, spicy wood smoke.
Octomore 14.3 (61.4% ABV)
The Terroir Titan: 100% Islay Barley | 214.2 PPM | 1st-Fill Whiskey & 2nd-Fill European Oak
-
Nose: Despite the massive 214 PPM, the nose is incredibly "green" and cereal-forward. Warm porridge, honeysuckle, and wild thyme are draped in a heavy, oily peat smoke. It smells like the Octomore farm after a storm.
-
Palate: An absolute texture bomb—oily and coating. Honeyed malt and creamy butterscotch are hit by a massive wave of medicinal smoke and black pepper. It has a unique savory, bready quality like sourdough toast.
-
Finish: Powerful and eternal. It leaves a residue of brine, heavy soot, and sweet malted barley.
Octomore 14.4 (59.2% ABV)
The Innovation: 106.0 PPM | Colombian Virgin Oak Maturation
-
Nose: A complete departure for Octomore. The Colombian oak is highly aromatic, smelling of grilled pineapple, mango, and sandalwood. The smoke is subtler, more like burning cedar wood.
-
Palate: Resinous and intense. The wood brings a massive spice profile—cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg—which pairs beautifully with vanilla fudge and passion fruit. It is dry, warming, and very "active."
-
Finish: Very dry and spicy. It leaves a lingering tingle of tropical fruit zest and a resinous, woody smoke.
