Octomore Tasting Set 13 Series The Impossible Equation 2022 Release (30ml x 3)

  • Octomore 5 Year Old 13.2 The Impossible Equation 2022 Release (30ml, 58.3%)
  • Octomore 5 Year Old 13.3 The Impossible Equation 2022 Release (30ml, 61.1%)
  • Octomore 8 Year Old 13.4 The Impossible Equation 2022 Release (30ml, 58.7%)

The Octomore 13 Series, released in 2022, continued the "Impossible Equation" theme by focusing on the influence of specific cask types and the distinct character of Islay-grown barley. This series is particularly notable for featuring a rare 8-year-old expression, providing a direct contrast to the standard 5-year-old releases.

Tasting Notes

Octomore 13.2 (58.3% ABV)

The Sherry Alternative: 100% Scottish Barley | 137.3 PPM | 1st-Fill Oloroso Sherry Butts

Cask Treatment: Matured for 5 years exclusively in first-fill Oloroso Sherry butts from Fernando de Castilla, Spain.

  • Nose: A decadent mix of nutty saltiness and heavy peat. Notes of roasted coffee, bitter chocolate, and leather are wrapped in a thick blanket of peat smoke. There is a deep, dried-fruit sweetness—think raisins and prunes.

  • Palate: Rich and oily. The Oloroso influence brings walnuts, orange zest, and a touch of clove. The smoke is savory and dense, reminiscent of smoked meats and wood ash.

  • Finish: Long and drying. A lingering saltiness (classic Bruichladdich) meets tannic oak, dried berries, and a smoldering campfire.

Octomore 13.3 (61.1% ABV)

The Terroir Titan: 100% Islay Barley | 129.3 PPM | 1st-Fill Whiskey & 2nd-Fill European Oak

Cask Treatment: Matured in a combination of first-fill ex-American whiskey casks and second-fill European oak casks. The barley was grown exclusively on Octomore Farm by James Brown.

  • Nose: Wonderfully "green" and floral. Aromas of fresh hay, wild lilies, and honeyed cereal emerge through a heavy, earthy peat smoke. There is a distinct maritime spray and malty sweetness.

  • Palate: Thick and viscous. Sweet vanilla and brown sugar are balanced by a spicy, peppery smoke. You get a clear sense of the barley—creamy porridge and toasted oats—mingling with a sharp, medicinal peat.

  • Finish: Eternal and powerful. It leaves a residue of maritime salt, sweet malt, and heavy soot.

Octomore 13.4 (58.7% ABV)

The Aged Variable: 100% Scottish Barley | 137.3 PPM | American Virgin Oak

Cask Treatment: A rare 8-year-old Octomore. It was matured in first-fill American whiskey casks before being filled into High Toast Virgin American Oak in 2016 for an extended maturation.

  • Nose: Intense and woody. The extra age and virgin oak provide massive notes of toasted vanilla, coconut, and sandalwood. The smoke is more integrated here, smelling of charred cedar and cinnamon sticks.

  • Palate: A massive spice arrival. Nutmeg, clove, and black pepper meet caramelized sugar and dried apricot. The smoke is "drier" than the 5-year-olds, offering a refined tobacco and leather profile.

  • Finish: Very long and spicy. The toasted oak leaves a lingering buttery vanilla and oak-char sensation, with a soft, fading embers smoke.
