Laphroaig Whisky Sample Cairdeas Quarter Cask Feis Ile 2017 Release (30ml, 57.2%)
The Laphroaig Cairdeas Quarter Cask (Feis Ile 2017 Release) is a celebratory nod to one of the distillery’s most successful innovations. While the standard Quarter Cask is a staple of the Laphroaig range, this 2017 festival bottling was released at Cask Strength, providing a raw, unfiltered look at what happens when Islay's most medicinal spirit is "turbo-charged" by smaller barrels.
By using casks that are only about one-quarter the size of a standard barrel, the spirit has significantly more contact with the wood, accelerating the development of sweet vanilla and creamy oak notes to balance the heavy peat.
Tasting Notes
Nose: An immediate blast of "industrial" Laphroaig. It is heavy on the creosote, tar, and medicinal bandages. However, the higher ABV and the Quarter Cask influence bring a massive wave of sweet vanilla, toasted coconut, and buttery toffee. It smells like a bonfire burning on a tropical beach.
Palate: The entry is viscous and "chewy." At 57.2%, it coats the mouth in a sweet, peppery oil. The flavors of vanilla bean and caramelized sugar are intense, acting as a perfect foil to the darker notes of charcoal, grilled seaweed, and brine. There is a distinct wood-spice character here—cinnamon and nutmeg—derived from the intense oak interaction.
Finish: Immense and lingering. The "fire" of the peat smoke stays on the tongue, but it is mellowed by a creamy, milky chocolate note and a final touch of drying oak tannins. It leaves a savory, salty aftertaste that lasts for minutes.
