Lagavulin Whisky Sample 7 Year Old Jazz Festival Online Edition 2022 Release(30ml, 59.5%)
The Lagavulin 7 Year Old "Jazz Festival Online" (2022 Release) is a bit of a cult phenomenon. Born out of the transition period when events were moving back to in-person but maintained an "online" presence, this is one of the youngest official Lagavulins ever released.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Punchy and unapologetically coastal. It hits with hot beach pebbles, sea spray, and fresh bandages (iodine). The "freshly charred" wood adds a distinct sweetness that smells like toasted marshmallows and vanilla fudge, which balances the intense lemon peel and green apple acidity. There is a "green" edge to it, like crushed pine needles and wet moss.
Palate: Explosive and "fizzy" on the tongue. The arrival is a surge of ashy peat and cracked black pepper. This is quickly followed by a surprising creaminess—lemon curd on a buttered biscuit. Mid-palate, it reveals its youth with a raw, malty sweetness, like warm porridge with a pinch of salt, wrapped in heavy woodsmoke and charred oak.
Finish: Long, sharp, and intensely smoky. The char from the casks leaves a dry, soot and charcoal sensation. It ends on a bright note of lime zest and sea salt, leaving the palate feeling refreshed but definitely "smoked."
Why it's special
-
The "Freshly Charred" Experiment: Lagavulin rarely uses active, charred wood (they usually prefer refill). The charring here acts like a "seasoning," providing the sweetness and structure needed to balance such a young, aggressive spirit.
-
The Power of 59.5%: At nearly 60% ABV, the flavor concentration is massive. It captures the "warehouse experience" where the spirit is still full of energy and hasn't been mellowed by decades of air.
