Lagavulin Whisky Sample 13 Year Old Port Finish Feis Ile 2021 Release (30ml, 56.1%)
The Lagavulin 13 Year Old (Fèis Ìle 2021 Release) is a standout in the distillery’s recent history because it marked the first time Lagavulin officially played with a Port finish for its festival bottling.
Released during the "virtual" festival year, it was hand-selected by Distillery Manager Pierrick Guillaume. What makes this one particularly special is the use of High Char Port-seasoned casks, which adds a "darker," more brooding sweetness than you might find in a standard wine finish.
Tasting Notes
Nose: A beautiful tension between sweet and savory. It opens with mucky farmyard notes and damp moss, which quickly give way to sweet peat smoke and butterscotch. The Port influence is subtle but present, offering red grapes, candied oranges, and roasted chestnuts. As it sits, you'll find a medicinal edge—iodine, coal tar soap, and wet bandages.
Palate: Thick and oil-smooth. The arrival is surprisingly sweet with honey and golden syrup, before a wave of damp peat smoke and burning leaves takes over. Mid-palate, it becomes much more savory: smoked meats, blackcurrants, and dark chocolate. There is a spicy "zing" of black pepper and ginger powder that keeps the richness in check.
Finish: Long, warming, and appreciably drying. The smoke turns into a tarry, ashy residue, accompanied by lingering notes of mint, menthol, and nutty oak spice. It leaves a final, savory impression of charred wood and salt.
-
The "High Char" Experiment: Typically, wine casks aren't heavily charred because it can ruin the delicate fruit notes.By "high-charring" these Port-seasoned barrels, Lagavulin created a caramelized sugar effect that meshes perfectly with their heavy, oily spirit.
- The Pierrick Guillaume Era: This was one of the first major festival selections by Pierrick Guillaume after taking over as distillery manager. It reflects a shift toward more experimental finishes (Port, Mezcal, etc.) while maintaining the core "Laga" DNA.
- Textural Brilliance: This release is often praised specifically for its viscosity. At 13 years, the spirit has enough age to be "creamy," but enough youth to retain its powerful, peppery punch.
