Edradour Whisky Sample Caledonica 12 Year Old 2019 Release (30ml, 46%)

An exceptional choice from one of Scotland’s most picturesque and traditional small-scale distilleries. The Edradour Caledonica 12 Year Old is a special expression crafted under the stewardship of Andrew Symington (who also owns Signatory Vintage).

Handcrafted at one of Scotland’s smallest farm distilleries, Edradour Caledonica is a magnificent demonstration of traditional Highland whisky-making. Matured for 12 years exclusively in select Oloroso sherry casks, this unpeated single malt captures the distillery’s signature heavy, viscous spirit profile. Non-chill filtered and presented at 46% ABV with completely natural colour, it is a dense, mahogany-hued dram brimming with dark dried fruits, roasted nuts, and warm baking spices.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Decadent, dark, and intensely sweet. It kicks off with rich aromas of stewed raisins, sticky figs, and dark orange marmalade. As it settles in the glass, deep notes of toasted walnuts, dark brown sugar, clove, and polished mahogany come forward.

Palate: Exceptionally thick, chewy, and mouth-coating. A massive wave of sherried Christmas cake, dried dates, and dark chocolate truffles fills the mouth, balanced by poached plums, warm cinnamon spice, and a hint of espresso bean.

Finish: Long, warming, and satisfyingly rich. The sweetness slowly gives way to lingering notes of drying oak tannins, candied ginger, cocoa powder, and dark treacle.

Why this bottle is special:

Edradour’s tiny, open-cast worm tubs and unusually small copper stills create a heavy, ester-rich spirit with a weight and oiliness that modern industrial distilleries simply cannot replicate. Furthermore, Caledonica represents full-term Oloroso sherry maturation rather than a quick finish, allowing 12 years of deep oak interaction to fuse seamlessly with Edradour's dense distillate. The result is an old-world, uncompromised sherry bomb that showcases why farm-scale production remains highly revered among single malt purists.
