Dramfool Bruichladdich 10 Year Old 2012 Release (700ml, 46%)
Independent bottler Dramfool is famous for its close ties to Islay legend Jim McEwan, but this Bruichladdich 10 Year Old (2012 Release) is arguably their most legendary "glitch."
Tasting Notes
-
Nose: Remarkably saline and coastal. It opens with stewed raspberries, maraschino cherries, and honeycomb, balanced by a savory touch of dry leather and cocoa powder. There is a distinct "dunnage warehouse" earthiness that points to its Islay roots.
-
Palate: Silky and viscous. The Madeira influence is clear but not cloying, offering lemon jelly, gingerbread, and macerated strawberries. A subtle, "old-school" waxiness coats the mouth, accompanied by a tiny thread of background smoke.
-
Finish: Medium to long. It leaves a drying trail of cinnamon powder, orange zest, and sea salt, with a lingering warmth of creme caramel.
Why this bottle is special
-
Early "New" Bruichladdich Spirit: Distilled in 2002, this contains spirit from the very first years of the Mark Reynier/Jim McEwan era. It captures the raw, experimental energy of the distillery’s rebirth.
-
Full Madeira Maturation: Most Madeira expressions are short finishes. This spirit lived in the barrique for its entire 10-year life, resulting in a deep integration of fortified wine sweetness and salty Islay air.
-
The 46% Exception: Dramfool almost exclusively bottles at cask strength. This release at 46% (per Jim McEwan's original recommendation) makes it exceptionally elegant and drinkable, proving that sometimes the "old guard" knew exactly when a whisky was at its peak.
