Douglas Laing Whisky Sample Longmorn 21 Year Old Old Particular for Wine Source 2014 Release (700ml, 50.7%)

The Old Particular range from Douglas Laing is a hallmark of single-cask excellence, but this specific Longmorn 21 Year Old is a standout "private label" collaboration. Released in 2014 for Wine Source, it highlights a period when Longmorn was the "distillery of choice" for enthusiasts seeking heavy, oily, and intensely fruity Speyside malts.

Longmorn is often called the "blender's gold" because its spirit is so robust it can withstand decades in wood without losing its structural integrity.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Wonderfully round and "fructiferous." It opens with an exuberant fruitiness, think tangerines and ripe orchard fruits, followed by a sweet barley sugar and sherbet style. There are subtle floral hints of lavender and violet in the background.

Palate: Spicy and structural. Early notes of cinnamon and ginger dominate, followed by a lighter oaked character, crushed sugar, and a soft touch of camphor (mentholated wood).

Finish: Medium to long and very clean. The palate’s fruit and cereal notes are "neatly replicated," ending on a crisp, chiseled finish that highlights the quality of the spirit.

Why this bottle is special

The "Masataka Taketsuru" Connection: Longmorn holds a legendary status in Japan as it was the distillery where the founder of Nikka Whisky, Masataka Taketsuru, learned his craft in 1919. 1990s bottlings like this are often sought after by Japanese collectors for this historical link.

Refill Hogshead #DL10188: Unlike sherry-finished versions, this refill hogshead maturation showcases the "Naked Longmorn." It is prized for its "waxy" and "oily" mouthfeel—a trait that blenders usually hide away to add body to famous blends like Chivas Regal.
