Chivas Brothers Cask Strength Edition 1998 Tormore 15 Year Old 2014 Release (700ml, 57.4%)

The Tormore 15 Year Old 1998 Chivas Brothers Cask Strength Edition is a hidden gem from one of Speyside's most architecturally stunning, yet under-the-radar distilleries. Released in 2014, this bottling was part of the "Distillery Reserve" or "Cask Strength Edition" series, which was primarily sold at the visitor centers of Chivas-owned distilleries like Strathisla or Aberlour.

Tormore is famous for its clean, "high-toned" citrus and malt profile. Distilled in 1998 and matured for 15 years in first-fill American Oak, this 2014 Cask Strength Edition is a masterclass in fruit and precision. At a natural cask strength of 57.4%, this expression is a vibrant, naked look at the spirit without the mask of heavy sherry.

Tasting Notes

Nose: A bright, seasonal bouquet. It opens with lemon custard and lime tart, followed by a distinct herbal freshness reminiscent of crushed mint and citrus foliage. There is a deep, sugary sweetness like crystallized apricots and pear drops, balanced by a comforting aroma of toasted white bread with honey. As it breathes, you might find a subtle hint of tobacco leaf and eucalyptus.

Palate: Powerful and zesty. The high ABV delivers a sharp arrival of pink grapefruit zest and spicy ginger. This quickly settles into a creamy, mouth-coating texture featuring vanilla sponge cake and lime marmalade. Mid-palate, it turns more "green" and herbaceous with notes of candied angelica, anise, and a touch of fresh pine.

Finish: Long, clean, and surprisingly fresh. The "creamy citrus" persists, leaving a lingering trail of lemon sherbet, white pepper, and a final, savory flick of oak spice. It leaves the palate feeling refreshed despite the high strength.

Why it's special

The "Naked" Malt: Most official Tormore releases are bottled at 40–43%. This 57.4% edition shows the true weight and oiliness of the spirit, which is usually hidden.

First-Fill Excellence: The 15 years in high-quality American oak have provided a "custard-and-vanilla" framework that perfectly softens the sharp, citrusy edges of the Tormore distillate.
