Cadenhead's Whisky Sample 1985 Highland 37 year old Original Collection 2022 Release

While Cadenhead’s often keeps the exact Highland distillery undisclosed for specific multi-cask vatting runs in this series, a 1985 Highland malt aged for 37 years delivers an old-school, ethereal complexity: wax, tropical dried fruits, polished wood, and soft herbal tea notes, all perfectly integrated at a natural reduction of 46% ABV.

Selected from Cadenhead’s inventory of ancient Highland stocks, this 37-year-old single malt from the 1985 vintage is a masterclass in long-term cask aging. Bottled for the acclaimed Original Collection at 46% ABV without chill-filtration or added colour, this expression demonstrates how nearly four decades in oak softens Highland spirit into a silky, complex tapestry of tropical fruit, antique wax, and aromatic spice. Learnt from multiple sources it could be a Glenmorangie.

Tasting Notes:

Nose: Intensely aromatic, vintage, and layered. It opens with luscious notes of dried mango, papaya, and orange oil, followed closely by antique mahogany, old leather books, and beeswax. As it breathes, subtle hints of chamomile tea, dried apricot, and soft floral eucalyptus emerge.

Palate: Silky, elegant, and exceptionally refined. The 46% ABV glides over the palate with layers of honeyed tropical fruits, candied peel, and vanilla pod, seamlessly merging with subtle oak spice, toasted almonds, and sweet herbal tea.

Finish: Long, warming, and remarkably fresh for its age. Lingering waves of drying oak tannins, waxy citrus, delicate ginger spice, and polished cedarwood slowly fade out.

Why this bottle is special:

Whiskies aged for 37 years represent a vanishingly small fraction of Scotch inventory, requiring decades of constant monitoring by Cadenhead's warehouse masters to ensure the oak never overpowers the distillate. It is furthermore special because a 1985 Highland vintage offers a rare window into historical production methods, where longer fermentations and older wood styles yielded a distinct waxy, tropical, and aromatic spirit character. The result is an irreplaceable, museum-grade dram that embodies the heritage of Cadenhead's independent aging philosophy.
