Cadenhead's Whisky Sample Irish Whisky 15 Year Old Annual Release 2021 (30ml, 45.4%)
The Cadenhead’s 15 Year Old Irish "Spirit Drink" (45.4% ABV) is a fascinating outlier in the Cadenhead range. Released in late 2021 specifically for the Milan Shop, it is technically classified as a "Spirit Drink" rather than a "Whiskey" because it was matured in a cask that does not meet the strict legal definition for Irish Whiskey (in this case, an ex-Caroni Rum cask).
This 2006 vintage spirit was initially matured in a bourbon hogshead before being transferred to the Caroni cask in 2018 for a final three-year "heavy" finish.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Truly unique. It opens with the classic Cooley tropicality—pineapple and mango—but is immediately met by the Caroni "funk." You’ll find notes of diesel, old leather, and shoe polish, followed by a sweeter layer of brown sugar, vanilla, and crème caramel. As it breathes, it reveals a floral side of honeysuckle and orange blossom.
Palate: The mouthfeel is thick and "dirty-sweet." The arrival is zingy with lime marmalade and green apples, but the mid-palate is dominated by the rum cask's influence: burnt molasses, salted butter, and a hint of copper. There is a savory, herbal undertone of mint and sage that keeps the tropical fruit notes from becoming too sugary.
Finish: Medium to long with a drying, spicy grip. The Caroni "petrol" note lingers pleasantly, accompanied by warming oak, ginger, and a final burst of grapefruit peel.
Why it's special
-
The Caroni Connection: Caroni is a "lost" Trinidadian rum distillery famous for its heavy, industrial, and petrol-like profile. Using its casks to finish a light Irish malt is a daring move that adds a massive amount of "weight" and "grit" to the spirit.
-
The "Spirit Drink" Loophole: Because Caroni casks were often used to store high-ester rums that don't fit the "plain wood" rules of Irish Whiskey legislation, Cadenhead’s had to label this as a Spirit Drink. For the drinker, this usually signals an experimental, high-flavor profile that couldn't be released any other way.
-
The Low Cask Strength: At 45.4%, it is surprisingly low for a "cask strength" bottling. This suggests a high rate of evaporation or a very "breathable" cask, which often results in a more concentrated, syrupy flavor profile despite the lower ABV.
