This expression was matured in oak (likely ex-bourbon) before being moved into a Pedro Ximénez Sherry Hogshead in October 2020. That two-year finishing period has fundamentally "painted" the tropical Glentauchers spirit with a thick, dark coat of Spanish syrup.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Heavy and "syrupy." The PX influence hits immediately with sticky toffee pudding, rum-soaked raisins, and dark chocolate ganache. There is a savory complexity underneath—notes of roasted coffee beans, leather, and walnut oil. As it opens, a hint of the original "Tauchers" fruit peeks through in the form of stewed red berries and strawberry laces.
Palate: Thick and mouth-coating. The arrival is a concentrated burst of bramble jelly, mocha, and black cherry liqueur. Mid-palate, it becomes quite spicy and "dark," featuring clove, nutmeg, and licorice root. The naturally oily spirit holds the heavy sherry well, preventing it from feeling too thin or watery despite the intense sweetness.
Finish: Long and indulgent. It leaves a lingering trail of Demerara sugar, dried cranberries, and maple syrup. A slight, drying oak tannin and a touch of tobacco leaf emerge at the very end, providing a necessary counterpoint to the PX sweetness.
Why it's special
The Texture Synergy: Glentauchers is a "heavy" spirit. When you pair a heavy spirit with a heavy sherry like PX, you get a "weighted" mouthfeel that fans of Macallan or GlenDronach will find incredibly satisfying.
The Balance of Bitters: PX can sometimes be cloying, but the herbal, "green" DNA of Glentauchers provides a slightly bitter, earthy backbone that keeps the sugar in check.
