- Bunnahabhain 19 Year Old Marsala Finish Feis ile 2021 Release (30ml, 53.6%)
In 2021, Fèis Ìle was a digital-first celebration, and Bunnahabhain leaned into the theme of "Discovery" by pairing a youthful, high-proof firecracker with a sophisticated, elder statesman of a malt. Both releases utilized Mediterranean wine finishes to create profiles that are world's apart from the standard dunnage warehouse style.
Tasting Notes
Bunnahabhain 7 Year Old Bordeaux Red Wine Cask Finish Feis Ile 2021 Release | 59.5% ABV
Don't let the age statement fool you—this is a high-octane "Small Batch" release designed to showcase the raw power of unpeated Bunnahabhain spirit when met with active French oak. Distilled in 2013, it was matured in Ex-Bourbon casks before a finish in Bordeaux Red Wine casks. At a blistering 59.5% ABV, it is one of the punchiest unpeated festival bottlings in recent memory.
-
Nose: Intensely fruity and floral. Aromas of red grapes, strawberry laces, and rose petals are balanced by a hint of malt biscuit and creamy vanilla.
-
Palate: A massive arrival of tannic red berries and blackcurrants. The high strength brings a spicy prickle of cracked black pepper and dry oak, which softens into toffee and milk chocolate.
-
Finish: Short to medium but incredibly vibrant. It leaves a lingering dryness of grape skins and a touch of sea salt.
Why this bottle is special: This is the "Adrenaline Shot" of the archive. It’s special because it captures the transition of the distillery’s spirit from youth to adolescence. The Bordeaux casks provide a structural, tannic "grip" that makes the 7-year-old feel much more mature and muscular than its age suggests. It is the perfect example of how a wine finish can "supercharge" a young malt.
Bunnahabhain 19 Year Old Marsala Cask Finish Feis Ile 2021 Release | 53.6% ABV
Product Description & Cask Treatment: The counterpart to the 7-year-old, this unpeated 19-year-old is all about elegance and "slow-motion" flavor development. Distilled on June 22, 2001, it matured for a significant period in Ex-Bourbon casks before being moved into Marsala Hogsheads for a long finish. Marsala—a fortified wine from Sicily—is known for its oxidative, nutty, and dried-fruit character, which integrates beautifully with aged Bunnahabhain.
-
Nose: Sophisticated and layered. Notes of caramelized pears, candied orange peel, and toasted almonds. There is a deep, honeyed sweetness reminiscent of heather honey and beeswax.
-
Palate: Luxuriously oily. Juicy sultanas and dried apricots are met with creamy vanilla fudge and a hint of white chocolate. The Marsala influence adds a nutty complexity of hazelnut and light tobacco.
-
Finish: Long and coating. A beautiful fade of sweet oak spice and lingering citrus oil.
Why this bottle is special: At 19 years old, the spirit has developed the classic waxy, oily texture that makes old Bunnahabhain world-famous. It is special because of the Marsala influence—it acts as a "golden" bridge between the brightness of the bourbon cask and the dark richness of the distillery's usual sherry casks. With only 2,682 bottles produced, it is a rare, sun-drenched Islay dram that feels like a Sicilian summer.
