Bunnahabhain Whisky Sample 2009 13 Year Old Warehouse 9 Amarone 2022 Release (30ml, 61%)
The Bunnahabhain 2009 13 Year Old Amarone Finish (Warehouse 9 Release) is a fascinating departure from the distillery’s traditional sherry-centric path. Amarone is a powerful, dry Italian red wine made from partially dried grapes, resulting in a high-alcohol, intensely concentrated wine.
When this bold Italian influence meets Bunnahabhain’s oily, maritime spirit at a massive 61% ABV, the result is a "Fruit Bomb" with a sophisticated, tannic structure.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Remarkably fruity and "bright." It leads with redcurrants, pomegranate, and cherry liqueur. There is a distinct floral note—like dried rose petals—intermingled with the scent of toasted sourdough and honey. As it opens, a savory edge appears: pink peppercorns and a hint of balsamic vinegar, all wrapped in a light maritime breeze.
Palate: A massive, warming arrival. The 61% strength delivers a concentrated burst of strawberry jam, spiced plums, and dark chocolate shavings. The Amarone influence provides a unique drying tannic grip, reminiscent of a heavy Italian red wine. Mid-palate, you'll find Bunnahabhain’s signature creamy maltiness and a touch of roasted almonds.
Finish: Long, spicy, and resonant. The red fruit sweetness slowly fades into a dry, herbal finish of clove, tobacco leaf, and a final, mouth-watering pinch of sea salt. Despite the high alcohol, the finish is surprisingly clean.
Why it's special
-
The "Wine Cask" Curiosity: Most Islay fans are used to Sherry or Bourbon. An Amarone finish is much rarer and appeals to those who enjoy the "red fruit and spice" profile found in whiskies like Longrow Red or certain Highland Park releases.
-
The High-Proof Thrill: At 61%, this is one of the highest-strength Warehouse 9 releases from 2022. It is a "pure" cask experience that allows the drinker to experiment with water to find the perfect balance of fruit and heat.
