The Bunnahabhain 12 Year Old (Pre-2010 Release) is a time capsule of a very different era for the distillery. Before 2010, the "standard" Bunnahabhain was bottled at 40% or 43% ABV, was chill-filtered, and contained added caramel coloring ($E150a$).

The packaging was the classic "tall, beige tube" with a ship’s wheel on the label. While modern enthusiasts often prefer the 46.3% un-chill-filtered version launched in late 2010, this older iteration has a nostalgic, "gentle" profile that many still find incredibly charming.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Light, sweet, and remarkably fresh. It leads with golden sultanas, honeyed biscuits, and fresh green apples. There is a distinct nuttiness (like toasted walnuts) and a very soft, floral background of heather and sea spray. It lacks the heavy "dunnage" funk of modern releases, feeling much 'cleaner.'

Palate: Soft and medium-bodied. The arrival is gentle, showing vanilla fudge and light caramel. Mid-palate, the sherry influence is subtle, providing dried apricot and a touch of milk chocolate. It is less spicy than the modern 12, with just a tiny hint of clove and malted milk.

Finish: Short to medium and very clean. It leaves a delicate trail of nutty oak, a wisp of sea salt, and a faint herbal dryness.

Why it's special

• The "Gentle Islay" Branding: This was the bottle that defined Bunnahabhain’s identity for decades. While Ardbeg and Laphroaig were fighting "peat wars," Bunnahabhain was the sophisticated, unpeated choice.

• Chill-Filtration Profile: Because the oils were filtered out to prevent clouding, the mouthfeel is "thinner" than today's version, but this allows the delicate citrus and floral notes to be more prominent on the nose.
