Bunnahabhain Feis Ile 2019 Whisky Sample 2008 11 Year Old Moine French Oak Finish (30ml, 57.4%)

The Bunnahabhain 2008 11 Year Old Mòine French Oak Finish was the "smoky" centerpiece of Bunnahabhain’s Fèis Ìle 2019 celebrations. While the distillery is world-famous for its unpeated sherry style, this release utilizes the peated Mòine spirit and pairs it with the spicy, tannic structure of French Oak.

This maturation is a "tug-of-war" between Islay’s rugged earthiness and the sophisticated spice of European timber, resulting in a dram that feels remarkably "structured" and dry.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Immediately intense and aromatic. It opens with charred sandalwood and cedarwood, followed by a dry, earthy peat smoke—think of burning heather and dried kelp. There is a sophisticated herbal quality, with notes of thyme and rosemary, balanced by a deeper sweetness of redcurrant jam and dark chocolate.

Palate: The arrival is sharp and spicy. The French Oak delivers a "peppery" punch of clove, cinnamon, and cracked black pepper. The smoke is dense and "chewy," tasting of smoked brisket and wood ash. Mid-palate, the texture becomes drier, revealing tannic red berries, espresso beans, and a touch of bitter cocoa.

Finish: Long, warming, and exceptionally dry. The smoke lingers like a dying campfire, accompanied by the firm grip of oak tannins and a final, savory flash of sea salt and licorice.

Why it's special

  • The Wood Influence: French Oak is much more porous and tannic than American Oak. In this 11-year-old, it provides a "dry" sophistication that prevents the heavy peat from becoming too one-dimensional.

  • The "Savory" Peat: If you enjoy whiskies that taste "culinary" (smoke, salt, herbs, and spice), this is a perfect choice. It moves away from the "sweet peat" trend and toward something much more rugged and traditional.
