Bruichladdich Whisky Sample 14 Year Old Yellow Submarine 2026 Release (30ml, 54.2%)
The legendary yellow submersible has officially resurfaced. To celebrate the distillery’s 25th anniversary, Bruichladdich has just released the Yellow Submarine III / [Reclassified].
This bottling pays homage to the iconic, tongue-in-cheek "Whisky of Mass Distinction" series from 2005, inspired by the time Islay fishermen dragged a real, rogue Ministry of Defence submarine out of the coastal waters near the distillery.
Crafted using 100% mainland-grown Appaloosa Scottish barley, this unpeated single malt spent its full 14 years maturing on the shores of Islay. While the historic 2005 original relied on Rioja wine casks, Master Blender Adam Hannett modernized this anniversary edition. It utilizes an evolved maturation profile: 75% first and second-fill French Bordeaux red wine casks and 25% first-fill bourbon barrels, bottled completely un-chill filtered at a roaring cask strength of 54.2% ABV.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Incredibly rich and pastry-forward. Warm, honeyed oats and buttery shortbread lead the way, opening up to toasted hazelnuts, creamy praline, and a dense, syrupy sweetness akin to pistachio baklava. Mild spices like nutmeg, ginger, and pink peppercorn balance the dessert profile.
Palate: Luxuriously thick and unctuous. Bright bursts of fresh orange zest, crisp orchard apple, and pear are closely followed by delicate honeysuckle blossoms. A massive mid-palate of creamy crème brûlée and rich vanilla custard is cut perfectly by a hallmark pinch of Islay sea salt.
Finish: Long, velvety, and deeply moreish. Waves of golden heather honey and toasted hazelnuts slowly unfold alongside subtle, warming wood spices and structural red wine tannins.
Why this bottle is special: It is a liquid milestone for Bruichladdich's rebellious, independent history. It is special because of the Bordeaux wine integration. Red wine casks are notoriously difficult to balance with unpeated spirit, but at a dominant 75% ratio, the French oak doesn’t overwhelm the distillate. Instead, the wine wood introduces structural spice, raspberry notes, and a drying depth that keeps the sweet, oily, bourbon-matured malt profile perfectly structured. It’s a beautiful reminder of the era when the distillery was just finding its feet, packaged at a punchy cask strength rather than the standard 46% as Bruichladdich's usual approach.
