Bruichladdich Whisky Sample The Ternary Project 2021 Release (30ml, 52.1%)

The Bruichladdich Ternary Project is one of the most intellectually stimulating whiskies ever released by Head Distiller Adam Hannett. It is not just a single malt, but a "Ternary" (three-part) marriage of Bruichladdich’s three distinct spirit identities: Bruichladdich (unpeated), Port Charlotte (heavily peated), and Octomore (super-heavily peated).

This 2021 release was a "Laddie Shop" exclusive, designed to showcase how these three contrasting DNA strands could be woven into a singular, balanced tapestry.

Tasting Notes

Nose: A kaleidoscopic aroma that refuses to sit still. It opens with the classic "Laddie" profile: honeyed malt, sea spray, and bruised pears. Then, the smoke arrives—not as a hammer, but as a veil. There are notes of dried apricots and honeycomb (from the Sauternes influence) wrapped in cold BBQ ash and medicinal peat. Hints of dark chocolate and toasted walnuts emerge in the background.

Palate: The texture is rich and oily. The entry is surprisingly sweet, featuring vanilla custard, poached peaches, and orange marmalade. The mid-palate is where the smoke ignites: a rugged, earthy peat smoke characteristic of Port Charlotte, followed by the sharp, intense, "charred lemon" smoke of Octomore. Underneath the fire lies a savory, salty minerality and a touch of crème brûlée.

Finish: Long, complex, and evolving. The sweetness of the dessert wine casks lingers against a backdrop of smoldering driftwood, black pepper, and salted caramel. It leaves a final, clean impression of lemon zest and dry peat reek.

Why it's special

  • The Master Blender’s Feat: Balancing Octomore (usually 100+ PPM) with unpeated spirit without the smoke "drowning" the fruit is a technical triumph. It shows the incredible versatility of the Bruichladdich stills.

  • Complex Cask Management: Like other modern Bruichladdich expression with components aged in Bourbon, Sherry, and Sauternes, this whisky offers a layer of "cask-matured" sweetness that perfectly tames the aggressive peat of the Octomore component.
