Tasting Notes

Port Charlotte 18 Year Old (Private Bourbon Cask #216-8) "HJW No. 2"

Distilled: 2001 | Bottled: 2019 | 60.4% ABV

This is a remarkable piece of Islay history. Distilled in 2001—the very year Bruichladdich was resurrected—this Port Charlotte represents some of the earliest peated spirit produced under the Mark Reynier/Jim McEwan era. Having slumbered for 18 years in a fresh bourbon cask, it was bottled in 2019 at a staggering natural cask strength of 60.4%. Part of the highly regarded "HJW" private series, this is Port Charlotte in its most concentrated, stripped-back, and powerful form.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Immediate "industrial" PC funk. Oily sheep wool, smoldering driftwood, and medicinal peat smoke. Beneath the smoke lies the elegance of 18 years in bourbon wood: creamy vanilla, lemon zest, and a hint of green apple.

  • Palate: Massive and oily. The high ABV carries a wave of salted caramel, peppery peat, and charred oak. Mid-palate, it softens into honeyed malt and a distinct maritime brine.

  • Finish: Eternal. A drying, ashy smoke lingers alongside toasted coconut and sea salt.

Bruichladdich 14 Year Old (Private Sherry Cask #1469) "The Adventure Filmmaker’s Dram"

Distilled: 2004 | Bottled: 2019 | 50.0% ABV

A truly bespoke "Laddie," this 14-year-old single cask was distilled in 2004 and matured in a premium Sherry Cask (#1469). Released in 2019 as "The Adventure Filmmaker’s Dram," it was selected for its bold, warming character—perfect for a flask in the wild. Unlike the unpeated core range, this private bottling leans into the rich, nutty, and spicy influence of European oak, resulting in a Bruichladdich that is both robust and sophisticated.

Tasting Notes:

  • Nose: Rich and autumnal. Polished mahogany, dried figs, and roasted hazelnuts. There is a faint floral honey note characteristic of the 2004 vintage, wrapped in dark chocolate.

  • Palate: Syrupy and coating. Notes of Christmas cake, spiced plums, and leather. The 50% ABV provides the perfect weight to carry the sherry tannins without overwhelming the delicate fruit.

  • Finish: Warming and spicy. A long tail of cinnamon, espresso beans, and a final hint of salted toffee.

Why it's is special:

  • Single Cask Exclusivity: As a private cask bottling, only a few hundred bottles ever existed. It provides unique drinking experience of the Bruichladdich distilleries.
