Buichladdich Whisky Sample Laddie Origins Feis Ile 2021 Release (30ml, 56.3%)
The Bruichladdich Laddie Origins (Fèis Ìle 2021 Release) is a deeply sentimental bottle for the distillery. Released during the "virtual" festival of 2021, it was designed as a liquid tribute to the people, the land, and the "Origins" of the modern Bruichladdich era (post-2001).
This is an unpeated single malt with a complex marriage of 13 different casks, encompassing 12 different vintages, 6 different barley types, and 9 different cask types. It is Bruichladdich at its most "Laddie-ish."
Tasting Notes
Nose: An explosion of "yellow" fruits and floral honey. It opens with poached pears, nectarines, and lemon curd. There is a distinct malty sweetness—like warm porridge with honey—balanced by a vibrant floral perfume of gorse bushes and honeysuckle. As it sits, the "terroir" comes through with notes of wet sand, seashells, and fresh hay.
Palate: The texture is exceptionally thick and oily. The arrival is sweet and creamy (vanilla custard and white chocolate), but it quickly evolves into a complex fruit basket of dried apricots, melon, and candied ginger. Mid-palate, the higher ABV brings a spicy "zing" of white pepper and oak char, while the wine casks contribute a subtle, drying grape-skin tannin.
Finish: Long, warming, and coastal. It leaves a lingering trail of salted caramel and lime zest, with a final, malty note of barley sugar and a whisper of Atlantic sea spray.
Why it's special
-
The "Kitchen Sink" Approach: Usually, mixing 9 different cask types results in a muddy flavor. Here, Adam Hannett managed to keep the profile focused on the Laddie DNA: citrus, salt, and floral malt.
-
Barley Diversity: This is one of the few bottles where you can taste the weight of the Bere Barley (density) and the crispness of the Organic Barley working in tandem.
-
The 56.3% Power: Most unpeated "Classic Laddie" expressions are 50%. At 56.3%, the flavors are much more "vertical"—the citrus is sharper, and the oiliness is far more pronounced.
-
The Anniversary Sentiment: Being the 20-year marker of the 2001 reopening, the spirit feels "mature" and "settled," representing the peak of the distillery’s modern philosophy.
