Buichladdich Whisky Sample 17 Year Old Single Cask Feis Ile 2021 Release (30ml, 59.2%)
The Bruichladdich 17 Year Old (Fèis Ìle 2021 Release) is a rare "hand-selected" gem from Head Distiller Adam Hannett. Unlike the broader Laddie Origins release from the same year, this is a Single Cask unpeated expression distilled in 2003 and matured for its full 17-year life in a second-fill Sherry butt.
With only 840 bottles produced (in 500ml format), it was a virtual festival exclusive that disappeared almost instantly.
Tasting Notes
Nose: A sophisticated mix of lactic funk and old-school sherry. It opens with brown sugar, raisins, and almond flakes, followed by a savory layer of burnt butter and leather. There is a tiny hint of clove and sulfur, typical of high-quality sherry wood, but it remains balanced by a classic Bruichladdich caramel and honey sweetness.
Palate: Massive and mouth-coating. The arrival is oily and intense, featuring dried figs, dates, and dark chocolate. As it develops, the "second-fill" nature of the cask shines—it’s very dry rather than sugary. You’ll find tobacco leaf, walnuts, and a prickly ginger spice. It has a "vintage" feel, reminiscent of bottlings from the 80s or 90s.
Finish: Medium to long and wonderfully drying. It leaves an earthy trail of maritime brine, salted fudge, and oak tannins.
-
The "Hannett Selection" Pedigree: While many distillery releases are blended by committee, the single casks chosen for Fèis Ìle are often personal favorites of the Head Distiller. This 17-year-old represents Adam Hannett’s specific taste for "refined" sherry—favoring the integration of the spirit over the raw power of the wood.
-
The "Transition" Spirit: Distilled in 2003, this spirit comes from the early years of the "Renaissance" era (following the 2001 reopening). It carries the weight and character of the older Victorian equipment but with the modern, meticulous wood management that Bruichladdich became famous for.
