The Bowmore "The Devil’s Casks" series is one of the most legendary trilogies in Islay history. Released between 2013 and 2015, these three small-batch expressions took Bowmore’s typically elegant, coastal profile and dragged it through the dark, intense fires of First-Fill Sherry Casks.
The name pays homage to a local Islay legend where the Devil was chased through the village of Bowmore into the gates of the distillery, eventually escaping inside a large sherry cask bound for the mainland.
Tasting Notes
Batch I: Released 2013 | 100% First-Fill Oloroso Casks (56.9% ABV)
-
Nose: Remarkably dark and concentrated. It opens with heavy medicinal peat smoke and sea salt, but quickly dives into dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, and a "sticky" note of black treacle.
-
Palate: Explosive. Waves of Spanish oak spice (clover and nutmeg) meet burnt orange peel and smoked mussels. The sherry influence is dry and intense, rather than sugary.
-
Finish: Extremely long and warming. It leaves a dry, sooty ash on the tongue with a lingering hint of bitter cacao.
Batch II: Released 2014 | 100% First-Fill Oloroso Casks (56.3% ABV)
-
Nose: More refined and "meaty" than Batch I. You get leather-bound books, tobacco leaf, and balsamic-glazed figs. The smoke feels more like dry driftwood campfire than medicinal iodine.
-
Palate: A velvety balance of salted caramel and dark red berries (cherries and plums). There is a savory "rancio" note here—think walnuts and old oak—that keeps the peat smoke beautifully integrated.
-
Finish: Sophisticated and lingering. The smoke is gentler, fading into dark chocolate-covered ginger and a maritime brine.
Batch III: Released 2015 | Oloroso & Pedro Ximénez Sherry Casks (56.7% ABV)
-
Nose: The "sweetest" of the three. A huge hit of PX raisins, dates, and maple syrup. The smoke is tucked underneath layers of cinnamon buns and vanilla fudge. It smells like a luxury Christmas pudding lit on fire.
-
Palate: Luscious and syrupy. A massive arrival of treacle, liquid chocolate, and dark fruit jam. The Oloroso spice provides a backbone of black pepper, but the PX sweetness dominates. The smoke is creamy and coal-like.
-
Finish: A "dessert" finish. Massive notes of brown sugar, espresso, and smoke-infused honey.
