Ardbeg Whisky Sample Still Young 2006 Release (30ml, 56.2%)
The Ardbeg "Still Young" (2006 Release) is a legendary milestone in Islay history. It represents the second chapter of the famous "Path to Peaty Maturity," a series of four releases tracing the development of Ardbeg’s spirit after the distillery was saved from closure and reopened in 1997.
Distilled in 1998 and bottled in 2006 at approximately 8 years old, this is Ardbeg caught in its "adolescence"—losing the raw, wild edges of the Very Young (2004) but not yet reaching the settled complexity of the classic Ten.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Punchy and coastal. It leads with intense kiln smoke, tarry ropes, and sea spray. There is a vibrant, youthful sweetness underneath—vanilla cream, honeyed malt, and lemon zest. A distinct herbal note of peppermint and pine needles cuts through the peat, giving it a very "fresh" outdoor character.
Palate: Explosive and "rowdy." The arrival is sweet and oily, but the peat embers hit hard and fast. You’ll find salted licorice, cracked black pepper, and campfire ash. Mid-palate, it reveals a softer side of toasted coconut and toffee apples, though the smoke remains the dominant force. It is significantly more "chewy" and structural than the modern 10-year-old.
Finish: Long, ashy, and invigorating. It leaves a lingering trail of burnt wood, espresso beans, and a final splash of brine. The heat is punchy but balanced by a surprising malty sweetness that stays on the tongue.
Why it's special
-
The "Path to Peaty Maturity" Legacy: This bottle is part of one of the most clever marketing campaigns in whisky history. By releasing Very Young (6yo), Still Young (8yo), Almost There (9yo), and Renaissance (10yo), Ardbeg turned their "lack of old stock" into a transparent journey that engaged collectors globally.
-
A Snapshot of Resurrection: Every drop was distilled in 1998, just one year after Glenmorangie PLC saved the distillery. It is the liquid proof of Ardbeg’s survival.
-
The "Raw" Ardbeg Experience: Because it was bottled at cask strength (56.2%) and at a younger age, it possesses a "ferocity" and a "peat-forward" intensity that the standard 46% Ardbeg Ten often tames.
-
Historical Rarity: While not as rare as some single casks, Still Young has become a "must-try" for Ardbeg completists. It represents a specific era of Islay where the distillery was still an underdog rather than the powerhouse it is today.
