Tasting Notes
Ardbeg Day Single Cask #2787 16 Year Old 2023 Release (30ml, 56.8%)
Nose: Rich, deep, and heavily spiced. It opens with woody depths that contrast with sharp notes of cinnamon, ginger, and nutmeg. There is a dense sweetness of Brazil nuts in toffee, dried dates, and raisins, underpinned by an unusual hint of linseed oil. Adding a drop of water shifts the profile toward "Ardbeggian" notes of flowering blackcurrants and aged balsamic vinegar.
Palate: The texture is luxuriously oily but carries a significant peppery prickle. It leads with a concentrated explosion of molasses, dark spices, and Brazil nuts laced with a refreshing touch of eucalyptus. As it settles, sweet honey-coated nuts ebb and flow against savory notes of maple-cured bacon, antique leather, and a brooding, earthy peat smoke.
Finish: Long, rich, and slightly savory. The finish transitions into notes of toasted sourdough bread, dense Christmas fruitcake, and roasted coffee beans, leaving a lingering, warming spice on the tongue.
Ardbeg Day Single Cask #4834 14 Year Old 2024 Release (30ml, 56.1%)
Nose: Rich and aromatic, the nose opens with scents of burning applewood and sweet tobacco. These are followed by floral notes of jasmine and orange blossom, intricately laced with echoes of smoked Earl Grey tea and a distinct malty richness. A few drops of water bring forward deeper notes of butterscotch, dried fruits, and a hint of incense.
Palate: The texture is rich, full, and mouth-coating. It leads with sweet, fruity hints of marmalade and ripe peaches before transitioning into deeper, darker notes of cocoa powder and walnuts dipped in dark chocolate. Mid-palate, suggestions of aniseed, clove, and black pepper emerge alongside the savory scent of damp, smoking heather.
Finish: The finish begins long and dry, showcasing the influence of the Moscatel wood. As it lingers, "figgy" and fudgy flavors surge forward, eventually settling into a classic Ardbeg finale of thick tar and antique leather.
