The Ardbeg BizarreBQ is what happens when you let a Master Distiller (Dr. Bill Lumsden) and a Grill Master (Christian Stevenson, aka DJ BBQ) loose in the warehouse. Released in 2023, this is Ardbeg’s first-ever "barbecue-inspired" whisky, designed to capture the essence of a smoky, meat-heavy backyard cookout.

To achieve this, Ardbeg used an experimental three-cask "meat-maturation" process: Double-charred Oak casks, PX Sherry casks, and the distillery’s own secret "BBQ Casks" (extra-charred ginger casks).

Tasting Notes

Nose: A full-blown smokehouse experience. It hits with charcoal embers, hickory smoke, and singed steak fat. Underneath the heavy soot, there is a distinct sweetness—maple syrup, dark toffee, and cinnamon. A touch of herbal rub (thyme and rosemary) pops up, along with a surprising hint of grilled pineapple.

Palate: Thick, oily, and intensely savory. The arrival is a burst of BBQ ribs with a spicy glaze. Mid-palate, the PX casks provide raisins, dates, and dark chocolate, which clash beautifully with the clove, ginger, and aniseed from the heavily charred wood. It’s like eating a burnt-end brisket that’s been dipped in a spicy plum sauce.

Finish: Long, hot, and satisfying. It leaves a lingering trail of sooty ash, leather, and black pepper, with a final, sweet note of honey-glazed ham.

Why it's special

The Umami Profile: While most whiskies aim for "fruity" or "smoky," BizarreBQ aims for "savory." It captures that elusive "fifth taste" (umami) that makes it a perfect pairing for actual barbecue.
