Ardbeg Whisky Sample Almost There 2007 Release (30ml, 54.1%)

The Ardbeg "Almost There" (2007 Release) is the third and penultimate chapter of the famous "Path to Peaty Maturity." Released when the spirit was 9 years old, it sits between the rowdy Still Young and the final Renaissance (the 10-year-old).

This is a critical bottle for Ardbeg purists because it marks the exact moment the spirit "settled." The aggressive, cereal-forward notes of youth began to transform into the sophisticated, oily smoke that would define the modern distillery character.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Remarkably fresh and coastal. It leads with brine, lemon oil, and peppermint, followed by a deep, "clean" peat smoke that smells like smoldering pine needles. There is a beautiful sweetness here—vanilla pods and white chocolate—balanced by a savory hint of smoked oysters and damp moss.

Palate: Intense and oily. The arrival is a "zesty" explosion of lime and cracked black pepper. Mid-palate, it becomes incredibly creamy, showing toasted marshmallows and honeyed malt. The peat is more integrated than the Still Young; it’s less "ashy" and more "tarry and medicinal." You’ll find notes of aniseed and salted licorice lurking in the depths.

Finish: Long, warming, and decidedly salty. It leaves a lingering trail of lime zest, sweet peat smoke, and a touch of medicinal antiseptic. It’s exceptionally clean, leaving the palate refreshed rather than weighed down.

Why it's special

  • The "Goldilocks" Dram: Many collectors consider Almost There the best of the "Path" series. It has more complexity and "wood-weight" than the 6 and 8-year-olds, but it retains a raw, cask-strength "vibrancy" that the standard 10-year-old (at 46%) sometimes loses.

  • The 1998 Vintage: Every drop was distilled just after the distillery was rescued from the brink of extinction. It is a liquid artifact of Ardbeg’s revival era.

  • The High-Proof Precision: At 54.1%, the alcohol acts as a perfect carrier for the heavy phenols. It’s a "pure" Ardbeg experience—no wine finishes, no gimmicks, just top-tier spirit and first-fill bourbon wood.

  • The Missing Link: Because most people either drank these or kept them in complete sets, finding a single bottle of Almost There to sample is becoming increasingly difficult. It is the "bridge" between Ardbeg’s past and its current global dominance.
