The Ardbeg 14 Year Old Anthology: The Unicorn’s Tale is the second release in Ardbeg's experimental "Anthology" series, which debuted in 2024. Following the Sauternes-finished Harpy’s Tale, this expression shifts the focus to a marriage of classic Ex-Bourbon and Madeira wine casks.

While the Harpy was a 13-year-old, the Unicorn adds an extra year to the clock, making it one of the older "affordable" limited releases from the distillery in recent years.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Rich, aromatic, and surprisingly "baked." It opens with warm banana bread, syrupy sponge pudding, and treacle. As the peat smoke emerges, it feels more like burning cedarwood than campfire. A splash of water reveals a tropical bazaar of guava, mango, and eucalyptus oil, all wrapped in a soft, medicinal haze.

Palate: Zesty and structural. The arrival is a bright burst of lime zest and sweet peaches, which quickly transitions into a more "industrial" Ardbeg profile: creosote, antiseptic lozenges, and aniseed. Mid-palate, the Madeira influence brings a spicy warmth of nutmeg and clove, alongside the creamy sweetness of vanilla pods.

Finish: Whimsically smoky and lingering. It leaves a long aftertaste of menthol, camphor, and wood smoke. The dryness of the wine casks keeps the finish crisp, with a final hint of salted caramel and ash.

Why it's special

The Madeira Milestone: This is the first time in Ardbeg's long history that they have officially used Madeira casks for a primary release. Madeira wood is famous for its "rancio" and high acidity, which gives Ardbeg a much more tropical and spicy profile compared to the jammy sweetness of Sherry.

Maturity vs. Smoke: At 14 years old, the spirit has entered a "sweet spot" where the aggressive medicinal smoke has begun to mellow into elegant menthol and cedar notes, allowing the fruit from the Madeira casks to shine without being smothered.

Double Gold Winner: It hasn't just won over the fans; it took home Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition 2024, cementing its status as a high-quality "curated" malt rather than just a marketing gimmick.
