Whisky Sponge Tasting Set Highland Malt Edition No.59(30ml x 2)

  • Whisky Sponge Ardmore 28 Year Old Highland Single Malt No.59A 2022 Release (30ml, 44.7%)
  • Whisky Sponge Tullabardine 28 Year Old Highland Single Malt No.59B 2022 Release (30ml, 46.1%)

The Whisky Sponge Highland Malt Edition No. 59 is a fascinating dual-release from the independent bottler Decadent Drinks. True to the "Sponge" style, these labels are a mix of high-level liquid curation and tongue-in-cheek humor.

Tasting Notes

59A: Ardmore 28 year old "Cream of Sponge" (44.7%)

  • Nose: Delicate and farmy. It opens with soft peat smoke, hay, and honeyed malt. There are lovely mineral undertones and a hint of smoked citrus peel.

  • Palate: Gentle but deep. Notes of beeswax, soot, and dried heather mingle with green apples and white pepper. The smoke is integrated, tasting more like cold bonfire ash than medicinal iodine.

  • Finish: Long and satisfyingly "dirty." It leaves a trail of earthy peat, salt, and light oak tannins.

59B: Tullibardine 28 year old "Pride of Sponge" (46.1%)

  • Nose: Rich and "bready." Think freshly baked sourdough, malted biscuits, and vanilla cream. Underneath the grain is a sophisticated floral honey and beeswax note.

  • Palate: Full and oily. It coats the mouth with butterscotch, apricot jam, and candle wax. There is a beautiful toasted nuttiness and a dash of nutmeg spice from the long maturation.

  • Finish: Sweet and structural. It lingers with poached pears, waxy honey, and refined oak

Why it's special

  • The 1993 Vintage Duo: Both distilleries had exceptional runs in 1993. Bottling them together as a 28-year-old duo allows you to taste two different interpretations of "Highland character" from the exact same year of distillation.
  • The Mystery of Maturity: Ardmore is rarely seen at this age (28 years), as most of it goes into blends. Seeing it as a single cask "Cream of Sponge" is a rare look at how Highland peat survives three decades.
