Ardbeg Whisky Sample For Discussion Committee Release 2021 (30ml, 50.8%)
The Ardbeg 8 Year Old "For Discussion" was a fascinating move by the distillery. Originally released in 2021 as a Committee Exclusive, it was presented as a "what if?" experiment.
Dr. Bill Lumsden created this as an alternative to the flagship Ardbeg Ten, questioning if a slightly younger, higher-proof (50.8%), and more "modern" cask selection could challenge the crown of the distillery's core expression.
While the standard 10 is 100% ex-bourbon, the 8-Year-Old is a mixed maturation. It uses a significant proportion of refill Oloroso sherry casks alongside the bourbon barrels.
Tasting Notes
Nose: Sharp and savory. It opens with charcoal, creosote, and smoked bacon, but there’s a distinctive "green" element—fennel, celery, and green peppers. The sherry influence isn't heavy or jammy; instead, it brings a dry nutty sweetness and a hint of milk chocolate. A burst of lemon balm and pine resin keeps it feeling youthful and fresh.
Palate: Bold and surprisingly peppery. The mouthfeel is thick and oily, carrying flavors of salted caramel and treacle toffee. The peat is "grassy" and "sooty," accompanied by aniseed and cardamom. Mid-palate, it turns toward charred oak and bitter orange peel, showing a structural maturity that belies its 8 years.
Finish: Long and intensely "glowy." It leaves a lingering trail of menthol, peppermint, and cooling wood smoke, with a final, savory touch of salted peanuts.
Why it's special
-
The "Alternative Flagship": This bottle exists specifically to ask: "If the Ardbeg Ten had been a sherry-influenced malt from the start, would we love it more?" It's a peek into an alternate reality of distillery history.
-
The Stealth Sherry: Because they used refill sherry casks, the color remains pale (similar to the 10), which often leads people to assume it's pure bourbon. It’s a "stealth" maturation designed to trick the senses.
-
The Strength Play: At 50.8% ABV, it carries the weight of those mixed casks much better than a lower-proof bottling would, allowing the savory sherry notes to punch through the heavy peat.
